MadhurashhTakam

MadhurashhTakam

I came across the madhurashhTakam when I was working in one of the remote but most beautiful part of India. I feel that I would not have understood the proper meaning which I have to take out of it if I would have read it before.
It is composed by Vallabhacharya a sage and philosopher in south India who founded the Vaishnavate sect in Central and southern part of India. It is related to Madhura Bhakti .
Madhura Bhakti is a worship with Radha-Krishna feeling. Radha-Krishna feeling is nothing but a concept of worshiping The supreme where a devotee worships or loves the supreme as if s/he is loving her/his lover.
It is written to praise Lord Krishna, through the projection of His qualities of. Due to all these qualities Lord Krishna is used to call purna purushha, the Complete Man.
In other way, we can take it as a guide line to reform ourselves, our behaviour. We may or may not believe in the existence of Lord Krishna but the qualities exists. We may say that these are the qualities of a spiritual person. How each and every act of a spiritual person becomes Madhur. Here are some of the verses: (Here the meaning of sweeter as taken by me is the pleasing, which is not only physical beauty but also related to beauty of heart which reflects the face and all the acts)
Adharam Madhuram Vadanam Madhuram
Your Lips are Sweet, Your Face is Sweet
Nayanam Madhuram Hasitam Madhuram
Your Eyes are Sweet, Your Smile is Sweet
Hridayam Madhuram Gamanam Madhuram
Your Heart is Sweet, Your Going is Sweet
Madhuradhipate Akhilam Madhuram
Oh! The Lord of Beauty, Your Everything is Sweet
Vachanam Madhuram Charitam Madhuram
Your Words are Sweet, Your Character is Sweet
Vasanam Madhuram Valitam Madhuram
Your Garments are Sweet, Your Presence is Sweet
Chalitam Madhuram Bhramitam Madhuram
Your Movements are Sweet, Your Roaming is Sweet
Madhuradhipate Akhilam Madhuram
Oh! The Lord of Beauty, Your Everything is Sweet

This Volume presents, for the first time in English language, the translation, based on devotion to our Lord Shri Krishna (bhakti), bringing out, from the original Sanskrit text, the “bhavartha” (meaning of the innerspirit and underlying loving sentiments, with which, this treatise has been written), of the monumental commentary Sri Subodhini, on the Maha Bhagavata Purana, by Mahaprabhu Sri Vallabhacharya (c 1479-c 1531). The tenth canto of Sri Bhagavatam is considered by all Vaishnavas as the most valuable and sacred canto, among the 12 cantos of this Purana- as this canto deals with the divine leelas of our lord Shri Krishna, who is the Shri Purushothama-the supreme lord of the universe. "These short treatises may be characterized as the practical theology of Vallabhacharya's 'Path of Grace' (pustimarga). For he wrote most of them in response to the questions of specific disciples, about central topics of the path of loving devotion to Lord Krishna, such as: worship (seva) of the Lord, the path of grace and the other paths, initiation to this path of worship and grace, worries about worship, refuge in and surrender to Lord Krishna, commands given by the Lord or one's guru, how love of the Lord grows stronger, whether renunciation (samnyasa) might help or hinder that love, the 'constraint' (nirodha) by which Krishna loves the devotee, and the reward of such worship, among other topics."
